Older AdultsAssisted LivingUPMC Assisted Living Residences Unlike many other states, Pennsylvania uses the terms "personal care" and "assisted living" interchangeably. Personal care or assisted living is for those who need assistance with activities of daily living, but do not require continuous nursing care. These activities of daily living may include help with medications, bathing, eating, ambulating, toileting, and transferring in and out of bed. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Public Welfare licenses assisted living facilities. These facilities provide assisted living services to more than three unrelated people under one roof. Most assisted living facilities are primarily social models with some provisions to meet medical needs on-site. Many assisted living homes also have special care units such as Alzheimer’s units and hospice units.
