University of Pittsburgh Educational Opportunities

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, through the University of Pittsburgh College of General Studies, offers educational programs for individuals who are retired or semi-retired, age 55 or over.

UPMC Educational Opportunities

UPMC Classes and Events
UPMC sponsors events and classes for older adults, which are hosted at UPMC hospitals and other convenient area locations. Topics include:
  • nutrition for people with diabetes and other conditions
  • weight management seminars
  • exercise seminars geared toward older adults, such as Tai Chi, PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise), and osteoporosis strength training
  • driving safety programs
  • respiratory-based programs such as smoking cessation, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • health enhancement programs including stress management courses
  • durable power of attorney and other elder law classes
The Institute on Aging and UPMC sponsor regular town meetings and other gatherings to keep the local community informed.

Other Educational Opportunities

  • Pennsylvania Department of Aging
    Provides information on opportunities available to older adults residing in the state of Pennsylvania that range from employment services to peer education and exercise programs.
  • Pennsylvania Senior Community Centers
    Offers information on social and educational activities and events provided by older adult community centers throughout the state of Pennsylvania and provides a listing of the centers by county to help older adults locate a center in their neighborhood.
  • Arthritis Foundation
    Helps older adults with arthritis to locate social and educational programs such as aquatics, pain management, and fibromyalgia self-help courses.
  • OASIS Pittsburgh
    Offers to mature adults a broad range of educational classes ranging in topic from the arts and humanities to wellness, fitness, computers, and travel.
  • Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA)
    ACLA offers a number of innovative programs designed for older adults and their family members and caregivers to disseminate important information and help promote the health and well-being of older adults.
