Personal attendants offer services to older adults who are unable to perform tasks associated with daily living to allow them to remain independent and in their own homes. Basic and ancillary services are available to provide support to older adults as their needs change.

Basic services include assistance with:

  • transfers in and out of bed, a wheelchair, and/or motor vehicle
  • health maintenance activities
  • bathing and personal hygiene
  • dressing and grooming
  • eating (including meal preparation and clean-up)
Ancillary services include assistance with:
  • shopping
  • laundry
  • cleaning and seasonal chores
  • transportation
  • letter writing and reading mail
  • managing finances
  • planning activities and decision making

Personal attendant services are available at any time. The person using the service maintains the right to choose the level and intensity of assistance needed. They also maintain the right to recruit, hire, train, supervise, pay and, if necessary, fire their attendants.

Those who need assistance with medically necessary care (i.e. giving medications, checking blood sugar, giving injections) should seek private duty nursing.
