Introduction to Medication Error and Adverse Drug Events
in Long-Term Care
Steven M. Handler, MD

Fellow in Medical Informatics
The University of Pittsburgh Institute on Aging Medication Errors
and Adverse Drugs Events project phase one includes voluntary participation
of nursing home staff in reporting errors and adverse events. Initially,
three nursing homes with Division of Geriatric Medicine faculty as
medical directors will provide data. Data analysis will be followed
by facility-specific quality improvement initiatives, with standardization
processes being evaluated through the second phase. By reducing complications
related to MEs and ADEs, reduced costs and hospitalizations would be
anticipated; an additional advantage addresses indicators applicable
to the CMS
Quality Nursing Home Initiative.
