The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine (SDM) provides numerous opportunities for students to gain exposure and develop an enhanced understanding of the complex oral health issues affecting older adults. In addition to receiving clinical training through the dental care services, students benefit from educational opportunities such as continuing education courses and a seminar series in geriatric dentistry offered through a collaboration with the Geriatric Education Center of Pennsylvania (GEC).

The SDM has collaborated with the Institute on Aging’s Council on Aging and the GEC, to offer a specialization in geriatric dentistry within the Graduate Certificate Program in Gerontology. The specialization affords students the opportunity to develop expertise in managing the oral health needs of older adults. As one of the primary goals of the SDM involves the creation and dissemination of new knowledge in the oral health science professions, faculty members with a research interest in geriatric oral health assist students in investigative activities.
