Designated as a John A. Hartford Foundation Center of Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry, the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Psychiatry trains nearly 20 percent of the nation’s academic geriatric psychiatrists. The Hartford Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program offers state-of-the-art training in clinical care and research at one of the largest divisions of geriatric medicine in the country, with an international reputation as a research leader for the study of late-life mood and cognitive disorders among elderly patients.
Program Highlights
To increase the number and quality of physician leaders in academic geriatric psychiatry, the Hartford Center of Excellence, the University’s Department of Psychiatry, and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic
of UPMC offer career development pathways in one of two areas: physician educator or physician researcher.
Physician Educator
This one-year program is designed to help disseminate scientific advances and to teach generalist physicians and interdisciplinary clinical teams appropriate models of geriatric care.
- The program enhances fellows' teaching skills through the completion of a Clinician Educator Training Program, clinical experiences in multiple settings, and by offering programmatic consultation to local hospitals and clinics.
- Fellows conduct research on educational needs of professionals and develop principles of curriculum to disseminate geriatric psychiatry education.
- Under the mentorship of university faculty, fellows will prepare a Geriatric Academic Career Award (GACA) application to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to promote the development of careers of academic geriatricians who emphasize training in clinical geriatrics, including the training of interdisciplinary teams.
Physician Researcher
This one-year program is designed to create new investigators and new knowledge in geriatric psychiatry.

The program encourages fellows to write and present scientific papers at scientific meetings.
- Fellows participate as research psychiatrists in ongoing trials and other federally funded research in geriatric psychiatry being carried out in the Centers of Excellence in Late-Life Mood Disorders and Alzheimer Disease Research Center.
- Fellows gain experience in designing and carrying out a pilot study funded by the Hartford Center of Excellence.
- Under the mentorship of university faculty, fellows prepare a K award to support sustainable research career development activities.
Eligibility
Physicians who have completed an ACGME-approved residency training program in general psychiatry; have a year of further subspecialty geriatric psychiatry; are geriatric psychiatry board-certified or board-eligible; are eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and who are committed to a career in academic geriatric psychiatry are encouraged to apply.
