Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System

The Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) addresses clinical care of older veterans in settings other than the hospital, conducts research relevant to aging, develops curricula, and evaluates effectiveness of the geriatric clinical programs. The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System was awarded a grant to focus on the clinical management of elderly with stroke, as well as related biomedical, rehabilitation, and health services research. GRECC provides many formal educational opportunities, including fellowships, residencies, research projects, and preceptorships as well as a variety of semi-formal educational programs such as seminars, lectures, grand rounds, and a journal club.

GRECC’s education program is interdisciplinary, including students in geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, and neurology as well as audiology and speech pathology, social work, pharmacy, nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

Continuing education through GRECC includes video teleconferences and clinical demonstration projects, focusing on care.

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Fellows participate in clinical research in geropsychology through the GRECC rotation.
